NYCETC has selected the winners of its 2010 Opportunity Awards. All of the nominees were of a very high caliber, which demonstrates the great work that is being done in the city's workforce development community. NYCETC will be honoring the following award winners at a special reception on March 16, 2010.

The four winners of the 2010 Opportunity Awards for organizations are
the following: 

  • Encouraging Middle Skill Jobs -- Year Up's Empowering Urban Talent Program. The award goes to an organization or program that has created a model of training and placement of participants in middle skills jobs with good benefits, sustainable wages, and a strong retention rate. Middle skill jobs are those requiring more education than a high school diploma but less than a four-year college degree.
  • Encouraging Career Advancement in A Growth Sector –- The Collaborative Health Workforce Model of Lehman College, Division of Adult and Continuing Education (a partnership with 1199 SEIU), and others. The award recognizes an organization or program that has created a model pathway whereby the un/underemployed are trained and/or find work in industries with burgeoning opportunities and sustainable wages.
  • Serving Youth -- Times Square Youth Program of Midtown Community Court. The award is presented to an organization or program that has created a model for in or out of school youth that integrates continuous learning with employment opportunities that have career potential. 
  • Building Employer Partnerships -- Upwardly Global/JPMorgan Chase. The award recognizes an employer and organization that have established an innovative or high-impact program model for hiring and/or job retention. The model should foster employment and job satisfaction through initiatives such as internships leading to permanent employment, comprehensive fringe benefits, family leave policies or flextime.

 

The three winners of the 2010 Opportunity Awards for individuals are the following:

  • The Leadership Award -- Andy Van Kleunen, Executive Director, National Skills Coalition.  The award goes to an individual whose leadership has been essential to advancing workforce development in New York City.
  • The Program Participant Achievement Award -- Tamara Grant of Nontraditional Employment for Women. The award goes to a role model who through dedication and perseverance and with the help of a specific program has created a better life for him/herself or his/her family.
  • Workforce Staff/Bonnie Potter Award -- Bonnie Holtzman, Associate Director of Career Development, The Doe Fund. The award recognizes a front line staff member who enhances the field of NYC workforce development by connecting participants to opportunity, exemplifying dedication and commitment, playing a pivotal role in furthering the mission of his or her agency, and having an impact on participants'lives. Through these activities he/she has also improved the running of his/her program.  In the course of his/her career in workforce development, s/he may have worked in job development or support services such as administration, or information technology, which contributed to his/her expertise.
