CUNY Launches Online Baccalaureate Degree Program (posted 5-8-06) The City University of New York (CUNY), a Coalition Board member and partner in many NYCETC activities, recently announced the launch of its first-ever online baccalaureate degree. The program will admit students who have earned a minimum of 30 credits but not more than 90 and now hope to finish their degree. It is also geared toward those who have earned an associate's degree and now wish to complete a baccalaureate. The online degree may be particularly beneficial to those whose progress toward degree completion may have been interrupted by the realities of life--such as the need to work full-time, provide child care or address a disability. Artisan Baking Center Food Industry Training Programs (posted 8-25-05) The Center runs several classes to prepare the job seeker for entry level employment in the culinary and baking trades and in the front of the house, service field. The New York Software Industry (NYSIA) is now offering free advanced IT training classes designed to meet the needs of NYC businesses. Upcoming courses include VB.NET, Linux Security, Software Project Management and XML and many more! NYSIA, as part of the New York Information Technology Career Ladder Consortium (NYITCLC), a collaborative effort between NYSIA, the Workforce Investment Board, the Workforce Strategy Center, Seedco, and the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development (CISDD), has received a grant from the U.S Department of Labor that will provide skills training to professional IT workers. Also through this program, NYSIA members have the opportunity to co-design customized IT training for their employees. All classes are taught by experienced industry professionals and are held in Manhattan. Please note that space is limited and priority is given to NYSIA members. The court has an on-site mail center for these not-for-profits, and a U.S. Post Office-trained supervisor who oversees the assembling, labeling, and sorting of 1st class and bulk mail. Dress for Success – Interview Suits for Clients (posted 12-14-04) Dress for Success helps low-income women make tailored transitions into the workforce. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and a second suit when she gets the job. The Dress for Success Professional Women's Group program then provides ongoing support to help the client build a successful career. Every client who is referred to Dress for Success receives top-notch attention from one of our volunteer Personal Shoppers, who helps the client select an interview outfit. New Tools for Frontline Youth Workers The National Collaboration for Youth, a coalition of the National Assembly member organizations that have a significant interest in youth development that includes fifty national, non-profit, youth development organizations, announced the release of two assessment tools that have been designed in alignment with the “10 competencies for front line youth workers”. The shorter tool, a set of “competency cards”, serves as a reminder of what the 10 competencies are and what it means to be a “competent youth worker.” A more comprehensive tool, the Competency observation assessment, is intended to be more flexible in order to better serve the needs of multiple users. This tool can be used to assess a youth worker’s level of acquisition of these 10 competencies and as a training plan. Verizon Foundation Nonprofit Resource Center (Posted 10-12-05)
The Verizon Foundation in New York City has launched a Nonprofit Resource Center that offers online and offline training in planning, technology, communications, fundraising, recruitment and evaluation. The center is powered by five nonprofit partners that offer a total of roughly 100 classes a year, plus online resource libraries. NY Unemployment Project Offers Unemployment Insurance Workshops Many unemployed workers fail to access Unemployment Insurance (UI)—income support available to workers who are laid off—either because they mistakenly believe they are ineligible or are wrongly denied. The New York Unemployment Project (NYUP) offers trainings on the basics of UI eligibility, wage and employment requirements; how to apply for and maintain UI benefits as well as information about New York’s UI 599 training program, common access barriers and system failures that claimants and advocates should know. The trainings can be tailored for low wage, immigrant, currently unemployed or at-risk workers, ESL or workforce training participants as well as staff of CBO’s, unions, and single and one stop service providers. Free Legal Services for Persons Who Are HIV+ and Have a Criminal Record The Legal Action Center provides free advice to providers and free help to clients on a host of issues regarding discrimination due to a criminal record, HIV status, or alcohol or drug history as well as HIV privacy and other HIV-related matters, including denial of NYC public housing, denial of a job or license, understanding your “rap sheet,” answering employment application questions, right to vote, certificates of relief and HIV-based discrimination. If the legal question concerns someone with HIV, you can say that your call is “HIV-related” and possibly get services more quickly as LAC has additional funding for serving these individuals.
EITC Assistant – Internal Revenue Service The EITC Assistant is a convenient way for an individual to find out if s/he is likely to qualify for the EITC tax credit by answering questions online about his/her age, children, living situation, and income. It is available in English and Spanish. Results of the eligibility check are made available immediately on the computer screen. The Assistant can be used by individuals, tax practitioners, employers, community and public service organizations, and IRS partners. EITC is a refundable tax credit that helps families. Reimbursement for Foster Care Youth in Post-Secondary Education & Training Programs DYCD is collaborating with ACS to support the NYC-ETV Program by helping to identify young people who are, or were, in foster care and may be eligible for up to $5,000 per school year for education and living expenses. Young people between the ages of 18 to 21 with a history of foster care or who were adopted from foster care at the age of 16, may receive reimbursement for tuition, rent, child care, transportation, purchase of a computer, books, school supplies and groceries, if they were enrolled in a post-secondary education and training program for the academic year 2003-2004.
